Met Eireann's new yellow weather alert warns of 'hazardous conditions'

Met Eireann has issued a new weather warning this evening for parts of Ireland.

A Status Yellow Ice alert is in place for Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, and Connacht from 5pm today until 9am tomorrow.

A warning on the Met Eireann website reads: "Ice in places leading to hazardous travelling conditions, especially on untreated roads and paths. Rain tonight, with wintry falls locally, will fall on already frozen surfaces leading to further development of icy conditions for a time."

Tonight will be cold with frost and ice continuing in places along with fog in parts too. Scattered outbreaks of rain will spread from the southwest with wintry falls possible locally.

Temperatures will be around -2 to +3 degrees before milder conditions gradually extend from the south through the night as southeast winds freshen. Tomorrow will be chaotic with the national forecaster warning of possible spot flooding due to heavy rain.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Generally cloudy Sunday with scattered outbreaks of blustery rain, heaviest across southern and western counties, bringing possible spot flooding here, especially later. The rain may turn wintry locally early on in the north of the country.

"Becoming much milder than preceding days with afternoon temperatures ranging from 5 to 8 degrees over Ulster and 8 to 12 or 13 degrees further south, all in fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds."
