Met Eireann’s updated forecast for this week shows a brief respite for many counties with the arrival of sunshine in clear skies - but not for long.
As the weekend approaches, meteorologists have predicted a return of grim conditions with a band of dull weather bringing rain and wind for some.
This afternoon will be mainly dry with a good deal of cloud and some bright or sunny intervals and patches of mist or fog will linger in places.
This evening, some patchy drizzle is expected in the southeast and also near the west coast while highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees are expected with light southerly or variable breezes.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy with patches of light rain or drizzle along with low cloud or hill fog and lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees.
This cloudy weather will continue into Tuesday with some patchy light rain or drizzle at times, mainly in west Munster, Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster.
The best of the incoming bright weather will be seen to the south and east where highest temperatures will reach 11 degrees with mostly light southwesterly breezes.
Tuesday night will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain or drizzle, which will become persistent later in the night in the north and west.
Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees are expected in light to moderate southwesterly winds - veering northwesterly and freshening in the north and west towards morning.
On Wednesday, rain in the north and west will gradually track southeastwards and break up through the morning with some sunny spells and showers following for the afternoon.
That night, things will be dry and mostly clear, but turning cooler with lowest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees in light to moderate northerly breezes.
Thursday will then be mostly sunny - dry in the morning with some cloud bubbling up during the afternoon.
It will begin to feel a little cooler with highest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees, in light northerly breezes.
Thursday night will remain dry and clear but it will be quite cold with lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees leading to some frost in places as winds fall light and variable.
The dry weather will extend into Friday with good sunny spells in the south and east, while cloud will increase from the northwest through the day.
However, outbreaks of rain will follow into the northwest during the evening and highest temperatures will range from 6 to 9 degrees, in light westerly breezes.
Heading into the weekend, the forecasters currently predict: “Continuing unsettled and generally cloudy over the weekend with outbreaks of rain”.
