Met Eireann's baltic update as frost and ice expected with temperatures plummeting below freezing

Met Eireann have issued a bitterly cold update, as temperatures are set to drop below freezing overnight.

Frost and ice could be the order of the day on Monday morning, with three areas of the country set to see things get awful nippy thanks to the lack of cloud cover.

The latest update from Met Eireann on Sunday evening reads: "Any plans this evening, here's your forecast update... Showers will become isolated this evening and the winds will gradually ease. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees in the midlands, east and north with some frost and ice. Milder further west and southwest."

And things are set to remain "unsettled" and cold as the week progresses.

Here's the overview as it stands right now.

Monday

according to the experts: "It will be cloudy on Monday morning, with some rain and drizzle continuing to extend eastwards early in the morning, with mainly dry weather to follow for the rest of the day in most places - just a little drizzle at times.

"A few bright or sunny spells may develop in the afternoon, though it will stay mostly cloudy overall, and with more rain and drizzle moving into northwestern parts later in the day. A mild day with highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees, in moderate to fresh and occasionally gusty southwest to west winds, stronger in western coastal parts.

Tuesday

"Another mild day with blustery outbreaks of rain. However, parts of the east and southeast will stay dry with some sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in mostly fresh southwest winds."

Wednesday

"Sunshine and scattered showers, some wintry in the west and northwest. Staying drier and brighter in the east. Highest afternoon temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees but feeling cold in a westerly breeze."

Thursday

"There will be plenty of bright and sunny spells across the country, but a few showers will feed in from the north and west through the day. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees, but feeling colder in brisk northwesterlies. Cold overnight with lows of -2 to 1 degrees with frost and ice expected."
