Met Eireann has forecast less than ideal weather for Christmas week as stormy conditions set in.
The forecast suggests that the current cold snap will give way to warmer temperatures next week, but it will remain largely unsettled across the country. Coastal gales and heavy rain are likely in the run up to Christmas, according to predictions.
The current weather has resulted in treacherous conditions across the country, with an Orange Status weather warning for fog currently in place. However, forecaster Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel has warned that the cold spell could be replaced by equally hazardous stormy conditions, with warnings also likely.

He said: "The latest guidance from the forecast models indicate that the current cold spell looks set to end next Saturday as a milder southwesterly airflow takes charge and displaces the present colder airmass.”
He added: "Temperatures could well be 10-12 degrees warmer next weekend as opposed to the weekend just passed, however there will be coastal gales, with heavy rain and some weather warnings are likely to be issued. "
The elevation in temperatures will be welcomed after a bitterly cold week across Ireland. Met Eireann has predicted that Wednesday will be the coldest day this week as Arctic conditions remain in place, with temperatures expected to drop to -6 degrees.
All road users have been asked to exercise caution over the coming days, as ice and fog continue to strike across the country. Dublin City Council confirmed today that they would be gritting some footpaths due to the severity of the weather, a measure which typically is used solely on main roads.
