Met Eireann pinpoints when good weather will return in forecast as lightning storms strike Ireland before 21C turn

Ireland will see thunder and lightning sweep across the island over the next few days - but there is a glimmer of summer left as temperatures will hit 21C in the aftermath.

The last few days have seen long spells of wet weather, with thousands of people getting soaked at Electric Picnic and elsewhere.

There remains a weather warning in place for Monday evening with "localised heavy rainfall accompanied by strong and gusty southeasterly winds and scattered thunderstorms will lead to hazardous driving conditions and spot flooding"

Things aren't set to get much better as we turn into Tuesday though, with more awful conditions forecast in the latest update from Met Éireann.

They say: "Showers or longer spells of rain will spread nationwide on Tuesday with some heavy bursts expected, especially in the south and southeast. The best of any sunny spells will be across Ulster. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20C in fresh southeast winds."

Things get slightly better on Wednesday, with "sunny spells and showers on Wednesday, some of the showers will be heavy and thundery. Maximum temperatures of 17 to 20C, varying in direction. "

However, it's Thursday when we'll start to notice a real change, with the sun returning in style.

The forecast reads: "Good spells of warm sunshine on Thursday along with scattered showers. The showers will be heavy in places with a possibility of thunder. Maximum temperatures of 17 to 20C in light to moderate northerly breezes"

As we move into Friday, we get the current peak - with "sunny spells and just a few showers. Highest temperatures will range from 18 to 21C."

So maybe don't pack away the sunglasses and hat just yet.
