Met Éireann issues urgent thunderstorm warning for 11 counties with thousands on flood alert

Met Éireann has issued an urgent thunderstorm warning for much of the southern half of the country as horrid conditions take hold.

The Status Yellow thunderstorm warning covers Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford.

The yellow alert is valid now until 9pm on Tuesday evening.

In its warning, Met Éireann said there is a "moderate chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening with a possibility of hail."

They also warn that possible impacts include spot flooding in places, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions, particularly for drivers who are warned to exercise extra caution on the roads.

Meanwhile, in their general outlook for the rest of the week, Met Éireann forecasters predict "very unsettled" conditions but with things "turning warmer late in the week and for the weekend."

They say tonight that "heavy showers in the southeast will clear early" but that "further light showers will spread from the Atlantic over the west of the country, turning largely dry with clear spells in the east. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 11 degrees, in light west to southwesterly winds with a few mist patches in places too."

The forecast continues: "Showers and spells of sunshine once again on Wednesday. Some showers will turn heavy at times in the afternoon, not as heavy as previous days though. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees, coolest in Atlantic coastal areas, in moderate to fresh westerly winds.

"A few isolated light showers will linger overnight [on Wednesday] and there will be a mix of cloud and clear spells, however more persistent rain will edge into the west by morning. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds, freshening by morning.

"Mostly cloudy with just a few hazy bright spells in the east during the morning [On Thursday]. Outbreaks of rain in the west will turn heavy and persistent at times, while patchy outbreaks of rain will gradually spread east later in the day. South to southeast winds freshening too and increasing strong near the west coast. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees, warmest in the east.

"There is more uncertainty for Friday. However, it currently looks as if the west will see heavy or thundery showery outbreaks of rain continue, with drier brighter conditions in the east, however there is still the potential for showery rain to spread further east also. It will be a warm and humid day with highest temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees in moderate to fresh southeast winds."
