Met Eireann issues unusual triple weather warning as hazardous conditions including snow to hit Ireland

Three separate weather warnings have been issued for counties across Ireland as brutal conditions look set to blast several regions.

Met Eireann announced two new alerts on Tuesday affecting counties along the west coast and Munster.

A Status Yellow wind warning will be in effect for all counties in Munster and Connacht, as well as Donegal, from 10pm on Tuesday until 12pm on Wednesday.

The national forecaster says there will be "very strong and gusty south to southeast winds" during this period.

Another Status Yellow alert for rain will also impact Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford.

The warning, in place from 11pm on Tuesday until 6pm on Wednesday, says there will be "heavy falls of rain, falling as sleet or snow in places for a time, with localised flooding and poor driving conditions".

It comes after an earlier Status Yellow wind alert for ten counties issued on Monday was updated on Tuesday morning.

Counties Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Waterford, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo can expect "very strong and gusty southeast to south winds" until 3pm.

As for the national forecast for Ireland, Tuesday will be windy with strong, gusty southeasterly winds, reaching gale force near western coasts.

Rain in the west and southwest will spread eastwards this morning, heavy at times with spot flooding in places. The rain will clear to squally showers with a chance of isolated thunderstorms and hail, while winds will become southerly and ease this evening with highest temperatures of 7 to 10C.

A forecaster continued: "Dry for a time early tonight. However, it will become windy again with strengthening southeasterly winds. Persistent or heavy rain will spread eastwards overnight, turning wintry on high ground and reaching the east coast around dawn. Cold with lowest temperatures of 0 to 3C.

"Wednesday morning will be wet and windy with persistent or heavy rain in all areas and localised flooding along with strong, gusty southeasterly winds.

"The rain will be heaviest over the southern half of the country and will fall as sleet at times, with snow possible on high ground. Through the afternoon and evening, drier, brighter weather will follow from the west and winds will ease. Cold with highs of 4 to 8C.

"Largely dry and clear as the last of a wintry falls clear into the Irish Sea [on Wednesday night]. Cold with lowest temperatures of -5 to -1C. A sharp or severe frost will set in along with some icy stretches, in no more than moderate southerly winds."

They added for Thursday: "Likely to be one of the drier and brighter days this week. Most areas wil be dry with sunny spells, but with freshening southerly winds developing later. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 or 10C.

"Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will gradually move up from the southwest. Some frost possible ahead of this, especially across the north and east. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 5C, in mostly moderate southerly breezes.

"The last of the overnight rain will clear from the east early in the morning [on Friday] to leave a day of sunny spells and showers. The showers will be heavy or thundery with possible hail. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12C, in light to moderate southerly breezes."
