A sudden weather warning for nine counties is now in force - lasting just 150 minutes.
Met Eireann issued the thunderstorm warning today at 2.30pm, with it due to expire two and half hours later at 5pm. The Status Yellow alert affects Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Meath, Wexford, Wicklow, Cavan and Monaghan.
It reads: “Some thunderstorm activity this afternoon with lightning and heavy downpours locally.” After the warning expires, the rest of this evening is forecast to continue wet with the risk of flooding.

Giving its overall forecast for the country, Met Eireann said: “A mix of bright spells and heavy showers today with the risk of surface water flooding. Also some thunderstorm activity, especially in Leinster and Ulster. Highest temperatures of 13C to 17C, coolest along Atlantic coasts, in light to moderate westerly breezes.
“Showers will become lighter and more isolated overnight with dry conditions for many areas. Lowest temperatures of 7C to 10C in mainly light westerly breezes.”
The weather is expected to take a positive U-turn for a few days from tomorrow with dry, calm and mild conditions.
However unsettled conditions are forecast to return towards the end of the week.
The national forecaster said: “Generally dry Monday with just a slight chance of showers lingering early on. The morning will be cloudy for many areas, although it will brighten as the day goes on with decent sunny spells developing. Highest temperatures of 13C to 17C in light northwesterly breezes.
“Mostly dry Monday night with clear spells, some mist and fog will form as winds fall light variable or calm. It will be a chiller night with lows of 2C to 6C for the northern half of the country, generally holding between 7C and 9C further south.
“Hazy sunshine on Tuesday morning however cloud will increase from the southwest through the afternoon. Dry in most areas with just the chance of a few stray patches of drizzle near western coasts later. Mild with highs of 14C to 18C, in mostly light south to southeast winds.
“Mostly cloudy overnight Tuesday with some patchy outbreaks of light rain and drizzle in Munster and Connacht. It will be a milder night once again with lowest temperatures of 7C to 10C in light to moderate southeast winds.
“Quite dull on Wednesday with some patchy light rain or drizzle mostly in Connacht and Ulster. Temperatures dropping back to between 11C to 15C, coolest along eastern coasts in moderate to occasionally fresh southeast winds.
“It will remain cloudy Wednesday night and most areas will have a dry night, there will however be the chance of some patchy rain of drizzle in the southwest. Lowest temperatures of 6C to 9C in moderate southeast winds.
“A mostly cloudy day Thursday with southeasterly winds freshening as patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle spread from the south through the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 10C to 15C, mildest in Connacht.
“Friday and the weekend look a little more unsettled with some heavy thundery showers or longer spells of rain at times while temperatures will generally be near average for the time of year.”
