Met Éireann issues immediate warning for six counties despite 20C sun blast forecast

Met Eireann has issued a thunderstorm warning for six counties despite a glorious forecast for the coming days.

The Status Yellow warning was issued for Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Meath, Wexford and Wicklow and is in effect from 1pm to 7pm on Thursday.

Met Éireann warns of "intense showers with scattered thunderstorms and possible hail" in those counties this afternoon.

They say there is a possibility of spot flooding and hazardous travelling conditions as a result.

This warning comes in the midst of an otherwise glorious forecast for Friday and Saturday with plenty of dry weather and sunshine around the country.

Met Eireann has forecast a dry day on Friday with sunny spells, although a few light showers might break through in the evening, with highs of 19C.

Saturday will consist of a dry day with spells of hazy sunshine and highest temperatures of 20C, though cloud coverage will thicken from the west during the evening.

The rain will return again on Sunday but high pressure building to the southwest will result in mild weather and mainly dry conditions next week.

In good news, the early taste of summer weather is set to continue for the entire month of May, with the national forecaster confirming in its monthly forecast that every week will see “higher than average temperatures”.

Long-range weather maps - which are subject to change this far out - show temperatures creeping towards 25C next weekend.
