Met Eireann issues freezing fog and ice warning as motorists warned of 'hazardous conditions'

Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow alert for "freezing fog" for all of Ireland, with drivers warned of 'hazardous conditions' on the road tonight due to ice.

The latest warning was issued this evening with temperatures in the capital expected to plummet as low as -4C overnight. According to Met Eireann, the nationwide warning for fog will remain in place overnight until 12pm on Saturday.

The latest alert from Met Eireann reads: "Patches of freezing fog are expected, causing potentially hazardous driving conditions." Meanwhile, motorists should watch out for ice on their windscreen and to de-ice their vehicles before setting out on a journey.

There's also a Status Yellow ice warning for all of Ireland, which came into effect at 7pm on Friday and will remain in place until 12pm on Saturday.

The RSA are also warning road users about the dangers of black ice, which can be difficult to see. Sheltered areas of the road, under trees and adjacent to high walls are most likely to see black ice.

Meanwhile, weather expert Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather has confirmed that he believes the cold snap will last for at least the next seven days. Speaking to Claire Byrne on RTE Radio One, he said: "It is going to last right through the weekend and into next week.

"It now looks like it's going to last most of next week. It looks like it's going to stay cold up until the end of next week, possibly milder air coming in next weekend."
