Met Eireann issues 12-hour weather warning for six counties as rotten weather bundles towards Ireland

The west of the country is set to be battered by wind and rain on Friday as a weather front moves in from the Atlantic.

Met Eireann has issued a weather warning for wind and rain with Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo under the yellow alert.

The warning comes into effect at 2am and will last until 2pm on Friday afternoon.

The forecaster said: "Becoming wet and windy tonight and during Friday morning with strong and gusty southerly winds developing. Heavy rainfall may cause some localised flooding."

The rest of the country won't avoid the weather completely with wind and rain to move right across the country.

A Met Eireann forecaster added: "Dry at first early tonight, but turning cloudy ahead of rain which will spread to Atlantic coastal counties before midnight. Rain will turn heavy and persistent as it sweeps eastwards across the country overnight. It will be accompanied by strengthening southerly winds with gales developing at the coast. Lowest temperatures early in the night of 7 to 10 degrees but turning milder towards dawn.

"Wet and windy on Friday morning with widespread outbreaks of heavy rain along with some squally downpours. Spot flooding possible. Rain will clear eastwards into the Irish Sea in the afternoon with sunny spells and showers following from the west. Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees in strong and gusty southwesterly winds, which will veer westerly and ease somewhat in the afternoon."
