Met Éireann issues urgent weather warning for 23 counties as horrendous conditions replace heatwave

The fine weather is ending with a bang today as Met Éireann issues as immediate weather warning for most of the 23 counties.

A number of warnings on both sides of the border warn of severe rainfall and thunderstorms on Monday afternoon as the warm and dry weather of the last two weeks ends abruptly.

The Status Yellow thunderstorm and rain warning was issued on Monday morning for Leinster, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary and Waterford.

In the alert, Met Éireann warned of "localised slow-moving showers with heavy downpours, potential thunderstorms and a chance of hail."

They said the impacts of the weather included localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions with roads expected to be treacherous later today.

The warning is valid from 12 noon on Monday until 10pm on Monday night.

The national forecaster made similar warnings for Fermanagh, Derry and Tyrone across the border as they warned of "thunderstorms developing Monday afternoon" that "may bring some disruption."

The warning for those three counties is valid until 9pm on Monday.

Despite the wet start to the week, the national forecaster has pinpointed when the 27C hot blast will return and sunseekers don't have to wait long.

They said Tuesday is to be very warm and hot. "Scattered heavy showers or localised thunderstorms will break out during the day, most likely in the west or midlands. Top temperatures of 23 to 27 degrees, although less warm along coasts due to sea breezes. Some coastal mist or fog is likely at times," the forecast adds.

Wednesday is to see little change to the soaring temperatures. with very warm or hot conditions expected, bringing with it temperatures reaching 23 to 27 degrees for most, but less warm along coasts.

"Good spells of hazy sunshine although scattered heavy downpours or thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon and evening, most likely in the west and midlands. Light southeast breezes," it said.

Thursday will also be very warm and sunny, with the risk of thunderstorms. Temperatures are to range between 22C and 26C, with little to no wind aside from sea breezes.
