Met Eireann issue 'dangerous' 12-hour weather warning for just one county

Cork is set to be lashed with heavy rain overnight with a 12-hour weather warning from Met Eireann.

The national forecaster has put the alert in place from 1am until 1pm on Monday with Cork the only county in Ireland with a warning.

The forecaster said: "Heavy rain tonight and for a time tomorrow, in parts of south and southwest Cork, will lead to localised flooding and dangerous driving conditions."

The south of the country will all be hit with heavy rain through the night although no other area is deemed bad enough for a warning just yet.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Generally cloudy tonight with a lot of dry weather for many places - just a little patchy light rain and drizzle at times, mainly in the south and west. However a spell of more persistent rain will move up from the southwest into parts of the south and west overnight, with some heavy falls, especially in south and southwest Cork. Staying rather breezy with moderate to fresh southeast winds. Not as cold as recent nights, with lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees.

"Tomorrow, Monday, will be a cloudy or overcast day, with heavy rain in the south in the morning and rain in western parts too. Drier elsewhere for a time, but the rain will extend northeastwards across the country during the late morning and afternoon, heavy at times. Drier weather follow on from the south later, but with showers following too, some heavy. Breezy for a time with moderate to fresh southeast winds, but the winds will ease later. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 or 14 degrees, mildest in the southwest."
