Met Eireann Ireland weather forecast predicts 'treacherous road conditions' as Status Yellow warning issued

Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow snow/ice warning for Ireland with treacherous road conditions expected.

The warning came into affect last night and will remain in place until noon on today.

Arctic-like conditions set to batter the country as Met Eireann has forecast "squally showers of hail, sleet and snow".

This morning will be very cold and blustery with scattered showers of sleet, snow and hail and the potential for isolated thunderstorms.

Through the afternoon and evening, the snow showers will become mainly confined to high ground.

A national forecaster said: "There is potential for stormy conditions near the northwest and north coast for a time. Highest temperatures of just 4 to 7 degrees and feeling even colder due to wind chill."

It comes amidst fears that Storm Gladys is on its way later this week, marking the third storm to hit the country.

Storm Gladys could hit this week bringing more torrential downpours and strong winds, wreaking further havoc.

It would follow Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin which all blasted Ireland last week. It was the first time three storms have been recorded in such quick succession since the naming system began.
