Met Eireann Ireland forecast heavy rain and wind with flood warning

The weather will take a turn for the worst in the coming days, with a weather warning in place for heavy rain and wind and snow.

The 17-hour Status Yellow rain and wind alert for the entire country begins at 10pm on Tuesday.

A forecaster for Met Eireann said: “Heavy rainfall on Tuesday night and Wednesday, possibly turning wintry in places, will be accompanied by strong to near gale force and gusty southerly winds.

“This will lead to hazardous driving conditions and localised flooding.”

It comes as the national forecaster posted another Status Yellow alert for 10 counties from 4am until 3pm on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, weather expert Alan O'Reilly said that the latest charts show a "concerning" picture, with a risk of flooding on Wednesday.

He said: "Latest charts for total rainfall over 24 hours period up to 6pm Wednesday show a concerning picture. Some weather models show over 50mm which could lead to flooding.

"Heavy showers tomorrow followed by a band of very heavy rain Wednesday which could turn to sleet and snow as it clears."

In its latest outlook, Met Eireann said: “Turning windy overnight but largely dry initially with some clear spells. Lowest temperatures generally of 0C to 3C with a touch of frost in places. Milder in southern parts with patchy light rain and drizzle pushing northwards.

“Fresh to strong and gusty southeasterly winds will develop, increasing near gale force in the southwest. Towards morning, a band of heavy rain will move in from the southwest and extend over much of Munster by morning."
