Met Eireann forecasts subzero conditions for Dublin as expert warns of 'biting cold windchill'

As many of us woke up to widespread frost and bitterly cold conditions this morning, Met Eireann forecasters have warned that a cold snap is on the way for much of the country.

According to Met Eireann, overnight temperatures are set to plummet near freezing, with frost and fog likely at times. The national forecaster has said the “unsettled weather” is expected to last right through to next week, with “rain or showers on most days”.

This morning frost will clear and it will be a dry start with some morning brightness. However, cloud will build from the west and outbreaks of rain will develop by evening, with breezy conditions and highest temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees.

Tonight, any lingering rain will clear early and it will become mostly dry. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in a fresh and blustery west or southwest wind. Meanwhile, Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather warned that a "biting cold windchill" is on the way for many parts of the country.

He wrote on Twitter last night: "Frosty tonight (Friday) with temperatures dropping to as low as -3c. Feeling cool over the weekend too with a biting cold windchill. Also we could see a dusting of snow on the very high mountains like Lugnaquilla with windchill down to -10c at peak.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, Met Eireann said it will start bright but blustery with scattered showers, some heavy with hail, with temperatures of 6C to 10C in fresh wind. On Saturday

Sunday night

"Some clear spells early in the night with a touch of grass frost possible in Ulster as temperatures dip to between 2 and 5 degrees, but it will be milder in the southwest where rain will extend from the Atlantic early in the night.

"The rain, which will be heavy at times, along with moderate to fresh southeasterly winds, will extend across the country through the night.

Monday

"A wet start to the day across the country, the rain will gradually clear from the southwest through the morning, although sunny spells and scattered showers will follow and they may merge to longer spells of rain at times.

"Highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees in mostly light to moderate west to southwest winds, veering strong northwesterly in the southwest later. On Monday night, showers along with strong and gusty northwest winds will clear the southwest early in the night, leaving mostly dry and clear conditions and light northerly winds, some patchy frost may develop as temperatures drop to between 0 and 4 degrees generally.
