Met Eireann forecasts period of settled weather for all but two areas before big change this weekend

Most of the country is due to stay relatively dry over the coming days before a big change this weekend as a band of heavy rain makes its way over Ireland, causing disruption.

Drizzle showers will be seen across Connacht and Munster this morning, however, and are due to turn a bit heavier in the afternoon.

It will be drier elsewhere with scattered showers and occasional sunny periods but it will be breezy with a moderate to fresh west to northwest wind, which will be strong and gusty at times in the southwest.

Wednesday will bring sunny spells and scattered showers with it, but there will be a light to moderate northwesterly breeze and temperatures will reach 11 to 15 degrees.

That night will continue to be mostly dry with clear spells and just isolated showers and lowest temperatures will drop to 4, meaning patches of mist are possible in light winds.

Thursday will be another mostly dry day with sunny spells and isolated light showers as highest temperatures reach 16 degrees in some areas with light north to northwest wind.

Things will remain settled with clear spells early in the night on Thursday but a big change is coming ahead of the weekend as clouds increase and rain moves into the west and northwest overnight.

Friday will therefore be very wet and breezy with rain moving east across the country, which will be heavy at times.

Clearer conditions with scattered showers will follow from the northwest later and highest temperatures will remain up around 17 degrees in some areas with a fresh and gusty southerly wind, veering westerly after the rain.

Early on Friday night, it will be mostly dry with clear spells and isolated showers, but this cloud cover will increase overnight and rain will develop in the west and southwest towards the morning.

As for the weekend ahead, the Irish forecaster has predicted “Rain for most areas on Saturday morning and afternoon but it will become drier in the evening.

“This will be followed by sunshine and showers on Sunday. Temperatures at the weekend are expected to reach 13 to 17 degrees.”
