Met Eireann forecasts blast of heat for Dublin as 'Azores High' to bring subtropical conditions

Ireland is set to enjoy sunshine and warm temperatures as a subtropical weather phenomenon is brewing in the Atlantic.

The mercury is set to soar this week as the "Azores High" will bring a scorching heat spell to Dublin. This phenomenon will start building from the south and move across the country from Wednesday.

Met Eireann meteorologist Paul Downes told Virgin Media News: "The Azores High is in the mid-Atlantic, usually south of the Azores islands. It’s a semi-permanent high-pressure system there and you tend to see it throughout the summer.

"It tends to expand and contract with time, but as it expands the jet stream which travels north of it is pushed further north, keeping those major weather systems away from us and giving us some settled conditions."

Today will be dry and cloudy but the afternoon will bring sunny spells. The highest temperatures will be from 18 to 20 degrees.

Tonight will be cloudy but will stay mostly dry. It will be a mild night with the lowest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees.

Tomorrow will see plenty of sunny spells and the highest temperatures will be from 18 to 22 degrees.

While there is no further forecast for Dublin, here is what the national outlook says:

Wednesday night

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A mild and humid night on Wednesday night. Most places will be dry, there'll be a little drizzle on north-facing coasts. Lowest temperatures are 13 or 14 degrees with moderate northwest winds.

Thursday

"Cloud at first on Thursday with sunny intervals developing during the afternoon and evening, the best of which will be in the south and east. Highest temperatures of 18 to 21 degrees generally, lowest in the northwest in light to northwest breezes.

Thursday night

"Overnight Thursday night cloud will again build from the northwest with outbreaks of light rain following towards morning. Lowest temperatures 11 or 12 degrees with light breezes.

Friday

"Mostly dry and cloudy at first on Friday with outbreaks of light rain in the northwest dying away with isolated light showers during the day. Some sunny spells will develop as well. Highest temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees for most in light northerly breezes.

Saturday and Sunday

"Dry for most with light winds and some sunny spells. Temperatures widely reaching the low to mid-twenties."
