Met Eireann forecast weather misery for Ireland as gales and rain to usher in early freeze

Met Eireann has forecast a miserable day of weather, with heavy rain and strong winds set to wallop the country.

Rain, turning heavy at times, is due to wet the west first before spreading eastwards where it will linger until the evening.

The showers will be coupled with strong winds at times, while daytime temperatures of 13C to 15C are forecast, before dropping as low as 3C overnight.

More heavy rain is expected overnight, which could possibly turn heavy or thundery near coasts.

The national forecaster said: “Rain, heavy at times, in the west will spread eastwards this morning, clearing to sunny spells in the west by afternoon and lingering in the east until evening. Southerly winds will increase fresh to strong with the rain and ease and veer northwest with the clearance. Highest temperatures of 13C to 15C degrees.

“Mainly dry and clear tonight. Lowest temperatures of 3C to 6C in mostly light westerly winds, fresher at times in the north and northwest with a few showers there, possibly turning heavy or thundery near coasts.”

Looking ahead to next week, the meteorological service is forecasting unsettled conditions with spells of wet and breezy weather, before the following week brings the risk of chilly conditions and an early freeze.

Giving the weather for next week Met Eireann said: “High pressure is expected to build in the Atlantic with low pressure positioned near Ireland bringing a rather unsettled and showery weather regime. Very windy conditions are possible at times.

“Mean air temperatures are forecast to be close to the October average, with some chilly nights expected towards the end of the week. It is expected to be wetter than normal nationwide, especially in Atlantic coastal counties.”

For the following week (October 17 to 23), it continued: “Early indications suggest high pressure blocking in the Atlantic will favour a rather cold northwesterly air-flow to be dominant over Ireland in forecast Week 2. Temperatures are forecast to be slightly below average, with the potential for some frost.

“A showery northwest air-flow is forecast at times which will likely favour showers to affect windward costs of the west and north of the country. Rainfall totals in some western and northern areas are predicted to be above average, but it looks set to be drier than normal elsewhere.”
