Met Eireann forecast last days of summer sunshine as date confirmed for return of 'heavy rainfall'

Ireland is set to enjoy a few more days of summer sunshine before a major change in conditions just before the weekend.

Met Eireann has forecast temperatures to remain in the low twenties until Friday, when the weather will take a turn.

Weather expert Alan O'Reilly wrote on his Carlow Weather Twitter account: “Might be a good time to ensure drains are clear! After a very dry period in many areas @IrishWater have put a hose pipe ban in place in parts of Cork and the weather gods seem to have heard that and are now showing a risk of very heavy rainfall between Friday and early next week.”

However, determining what areas will see the heavy rain on Friday is somewhat uncertain.

He added: “Latest charts for weekend just rolling out and I’m afraid still uncertain how it will pan out. This animation shows the ECMWF charts and you can see some very heavy rain Saturday night into Sunday morning with also some strong gusts Sunday morning.”

In the meantime, this afternoon will be dry, bright and sunny for most areas, though it will be a bit cloudier over Ulster, where there will be a chance of an isolated shower.

Highest afternoon temperatures of 19 to 23 degrees, a few degrees lower along the east coast in light to moderate easterly winds.

Dry tonight with mostly clear skies. However, some isolated showers are possible along the east coast towards the morning.

Some mist and fog will also form as winds fall light. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees.

Another dry day tomorrow with good sunny spells developing. Just the chance of an isolated shower or two in the east early in the morning.

Highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees, warmest in the west in light to moderate east to northeast breezes.

A dry and clear night on Wednesday with light northeast breezes. A few pockets of mist and fog may form. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees

After a dry, sunny morning, some cloud will build on Thursday, with well scattered showers developing in the afternoon. Many areas dry with sunny spells.

Highest temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees with light easterly breezes.

Dry and clear to start to Thursday night with some fog forming in near calm conditions. Turning cloudier in the west towards morning.

Lowest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees.

Unfortunately, rain will arrive on Friday just in time for the Electric Picnic festival.

Outbreaks of rain will push in from the west during the day, turning heavier over the western half of the country in the afternoon.

The east will have a mix of showers and sunny spells before rain arrives in the evening.

Highest temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees, warmest in Leinster but cooler in parts of the north and west. Rain will continue overnight. The west and southwest will likely be driest.

Low pressure near Ireland will bring showers and longer spells of rain throughout the weekend. Rain will likely be heavy at times in some areas.

Highest temperatures in the mid to high teens. Winds generally light to moderate in strength.
