Subzero temperatures and frost are set to make a bitter comeback in the coming days as a mild, sunny week gives way to an influx of freezing weather.
Met Eireann has confirmed the unusual conditions will last for at least 72-hours, admitting temperatures will feel “rather cool for late April.”
Ireland recorded its warmest day of the year so far last weekend, with thermometers going higher than 20C in three separate locations last Sunday.

But now, the national forecaster says that an incoming bitter chill will send the mercury as low as -2C as low pressure replaces the high, bringing in an icy chill from the east.
Average weather is expected for the rest of Friday with daytime temperatures of around 12C to 16C, dropping to 5C to 8C overnight.
Saturday is expected to be a cloudy day, with showery rain turning heavy at times, and temperatures of 9C to 13C.
Overnight Saturday, cold air is expected to move down over Ireland with the return of bitter conditions.
Met Eireann has forecast frost and subzero temperatures at times right through until Tuesday.
It’s day-by-day forecast from this weekend reads: “Mostly cloudy Saturday with scattered outbreaks of showery rain, some of which may turn heavy. Highest temperatures of 9C to 13C degees in very light and variable breezes.
“Showery rain Saturday night in the east and south is expected to clear on Saturday night to leave a cold night with clear spells and variable amounts of cloud. Lowest temperatures of 1C to 4C in light or moderate northerly breezes.
“Some bright spells on Sunday but there will be a good deal of cloud about overall with scattered showers. Showers may turn heavy and prolonged in the northeast later in the day. Maximum temperatures of 10C to 15C, coolest in the north in moderate northwest winds
“On Sunday night, showers will continue across the north and east but with long dry periods in the south and west. A cold night with lowest temperatures ranging from 2C to 5C in light northerly winds.
“A fresh and breezy day on Monday with a mix of cloud and some bright spells. It is expected to remain largely dry but the odd shower may occur. Maximum temperatures of 8C to 11C in a fresh and gusty northerly breeze.
“Cold on Monday night with clear spells and there is the potential for a widespread frost as temperatures dip back to between -2C and 3C.
“A cold and mostly sunny start on Tuesday with frost in places. Cloud will build up during the day and outbreaks of rain will develop in the southwest towards evening time. Highest temperatures of 9C to 12C in moderate southeast winds.
“Rain will extend countrywide on Tuesday night and it will turn rather windy. Lowest temperatures of 4C to 7C early in the night, but it will turn milder towards morning.”
