Met Eireann confirms snow forecast for Ireland as Arctic wind to send temperatures plummeting to -4C

Met Eireann has issued a 'winter weather advisory' for the entire country with temperatures set to plummet and 'snow' on the way.

It is set to turn bitterly cold as an Arctic airflow brings freezing weather to Ireland. Temperatures at night are expected to drop to as low as -4C, or lower, with a wind chill factor making it feel even colder.

The national forecaster warned that snow, ice, sleet, and severe frosts are expected over the next few days.

The advisory came into effect at 2pm today and will stay in place for almost a week, until next 12pm Thursday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Turning cold across the country between Sunday evening and Thursday morning as an Arctic airflow becomes established, bringing sharp to severe frosts and icy stretches on roads and footpaths.

"Some showers of hail, sleet and snow are expected with the potential for freezing fog. Further updates to the advisory and warnings are expected in the coming days."

Saturday will see the first major change in the weather with a chance of snow as "wintry falls possible on high ground". Then temperatures will drop below zero on Saturday night, falling to -2C, with "frost and icy stretches developing".

On Sunday, it is expected to be a cool, bright day but could see showers and "falls of sleet" at times. Daytime temperatures will stay between 3C to 7C, but overnight will turn very cold again as temperatures will fall to -3C or -4C throughout the entire country.

This will bring "icy stretches", especially on untreated roads and paths and patches of freezing fog will also develop overnight.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow wind warning has been issued for Donegal as strong gusts of wind continue to batter the county tomorrow.

The alert is valid from 12pm to 10pm on Saturday. A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Westerly winds will be very strong and gusty, especially near coasts and on high ground."
