Met Eireann confirm when and where 'thundery downpours' will hit this week as dreadful conditions forecast

Met Eireann has confirmed that heavy thundery downpours will batter the country this week in a stark u-turn.

The Irish forecaster has confirmed that there are few areas that will escape the brutal weather and have tracked when and where the showers will arrive.

Tuesday morning will be cloudy across the eastern half of the country with patchy rain and drizzle - it’ll be drier to the west with sunny spells.

More persistent rain will spread across Leinster and east Ulster through the morning and afternoon, turning heavy at times.

Further west will stay largely dry with sunny spells, though scattered showers will develop in the afternoon, turning heavy or thundery at times.

Tuesday night will see a band of showers will move northwards across the western half of the country, becoming heavy at times.

It’ll be mainly dry in the east with isolated showers but it will also be breezy, windiest near the west coast where it will be very blustery.

Winds will be coming from a mild southerly direction with lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees. Turning drier towards morning.

Wednesday will then be a largely dry and sunny day to begin with isolated showers in the northwest.

However, a band of rain will move in from the southwest and track northeastwards across the country through the afternoon and evening with some heavy downpours possible.

Rain will clear through the northeast on Wednesday night, with long clear spells developing.

The forecaster warns that “some mist or fog patches may form as the winds largely ease, although fresh to strong southwest winds will persist on western coasts.”

Thursday will then see a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, however, there will be decent dry spells for most areas. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in moderate south to southwest winds, winds stronger near western coasts.

As it stands, Friday looks set to be another very wet day with moderate southwesterly winds, stronger near western coasts, and temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees.

Sunshine and scattered showers look to follow for next weekend in a fresh westerly breeze and temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees, possibly a little warmer on Sunday with lighter winds.
