Ian Wright has bemoaned the officiating from West Ham’s FA Cup third round defeat to Aston Villa.
Two quick-fire second half goals from Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers condemned Graham Potter to a loss in his first game as West Ham manager after Lucas Paqueta had opened the scoring at Villa Park.
Whilst there was no argument about Onana's equaliser, there was controversy over the corner from which it came from.
The Belgian had sent an effort harmlessly wide of Lukasz Fabianski's goal, but despite no hint of the ball being deflected by a West Ham player, the decision was made to award Villa a corner.
Speaking about the incident on ITV after the game, Wright was perplexed with the decision as he said: "The referee and the assistant messed up totally with that corner."
"I can’t believe the referee, he’s standing there.
"He’s standing right there and it’s gone through a gap of people and he’s not seen it.
“Look, no one is near it – how can you get that one wrong?
“West Ham were in this. Yes, they had to defend a bit because Villa got on top but it’s such a shame."
As pointed out by, ITV host Mark Pougatch, even if VAR was in use, they would not have able to get involved to overrule Tim Robinson's decision.
