Messages of support to family of man who died at Switch Island

People tonight spoke of their shock after a man died when storm debris smashed through a van windscreen.

Merseyside Police rushed to Switch Island at around 2.10pm on Friday following reports of vehicle damage.

At the scene police found a man in his 50s, who was a passenger in the van, injured.

Paramedics cared for him but tragically he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The van driver was not injured.

The passenger’s next of kin are being supported by specially trained officers and inquiries into the tragedy are ongoing.

Sergeant Amy Murray said: “This is a very tragic incident and our sympathies go out to the family and friends of the passenger and anyone else who has been affected.

“I would ask anyone who was in the area of Switch Island/Dunningsbridge Road, heading towards Aintree, from Maghull, at around 2pm who saw anything or captured anything significant on their dash cam to contact us as they may have information which is vital to our enquiries.”

The incident happened as Storm Eunice hit the region with winds of up to 70pmh.

Pat Moriatis said: "Very sad news my thoughts go out to his family ,friends & also to the driver who must be devastated."

Annie Sharpes said: "Such a horrible thing to happen to someone just going about their business. That could've been any one of us today. So shocking, poor man."

Kimberley Barker said: "So sad for the man who lost his life and his family and friends. The poor driver of the vehicle must be in shock too."

Joan Haresnape said: "So sad. Deepest sympathy to his family. I bet lots of families were glad to see their loved ones get home today."
