Merthyr Tydfil has secured funding to look into a large expansion of the train station. The town has been awarded £350,000 for feasibility work on new track and platform options to potentially enhance the rail capacity.
The money has been secured by the Cardiff Capital Regional Transport Authority, through its Metro Plus Programme. The work has been aligned to the Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre Masterplan to improve links between rail and bus stations, as well as the redevelopment of lower High Street.
The council hopes to undertake further engagement in February 2023 on some options to achieve the aspirations. A spokeswoman for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council said: "The Cardiff Capital Regional Transport Authority, through its Metro Plus Programme, has awarded £350,000 funding for feasibility work on new track and platform options to potentially enhance the rail capacity at Merthyr Tydfil Railway Station.
"This work has been aligned to the Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre Masterplan and the opportunity of enhancing the linkages between the rail and bus interchanges, as well as the redevelopment of the Lower High Street.
"Following an initial public and business engagement on improving accessibility between interchanges, it is hoped that we will undertake a further engagement in February 2023 on some potential options to achieve these aspirations."
