Merthyr swimming pool opening date announced after four-year closure

A date has been announced for the reopening of Merthyr Tydfil swimming pool which has been closed for more than four years. The pool at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre has been shut since December, 2019, due to leaks affecting the concrete and causing tiles to lift off.

Early in 2020, the council commissioned a number of surveys to try to find the cause of the issue before Wellbeing@Merthyr (Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Trust), which leases the centre from the council, revealed plans to potentially redevelop the entire leisure centre including the pools.

The coronavirus pandemic hampered the work and more structural issues were discovered, with more investigatory work needed than originally thought. In July, 2021, it was agreed that the council would lead on the redevelopment of the pools and skate park and in October 2022 funding was secured from Welsh Government.

Merthyr Tydfil council has now revealed that work started on the pool facility in December 2022. It involved a refurbishment of the main and learner pool as well as the development of a new themed splash pool for infants.

After much anticipation from the public, work is scheduled to be completed in autumn 2023, according to the council. The local authority is working with international leisure facilities developer, Alliance Leisure, and business services company Red Start on the project.
