Merseyside Police sergeant charged with assaulting man in custody

A Merseyside Police sergeant is set to appear in court charged with causing actual bodily harm to a man in custody at a city police station.

Sgt Peter Jordan, 52, was the custody sergeant on the evening of December 16, 2018, when a 23-year-old man was brought in to the custody suite at St Anne Street station.

The man had been arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, but suffered injuries to his face during his detainment.

He later complained about his treatment and the case was referred to police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in January last year.

Today the IOPC announced that after it completed its investigations, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised charging Sgt Jordan with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The officer is due to appear at Warrington Magistrates' Court tomorrow (July 1).
