Merseyside's MPs have expressed their "solidarity" with Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner after she was the subject of remarks in a national newspaper.
Ms Rayner accused Tory MPs of using anonymous briefings to spread "desperate, perverted smears" about her by claiming she has sought to distract the Prime Minister provocatively in the Commons. Boris Johnson, in a show of support for the deputy Labour leader, said he "deplored the misogyny directed at her anonymously".
The Mail On Sunday (MoS) reported Conservatives claimed Ms Rayner enjoyed attempting to put Mr Johnson "off his stride" during Prime Minister's Questions by "crossing and uncrossing her legs". Ms Rayner often sits next to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and opposite the Prime Minister during the weekly Commons clashes.

She has also stood in for Sir Keir at PMQs when he has been forced to self-isolate due to coronavirus. In a series of tweets, Ms Rayner lashed out at the "lies" being briefed about her. And Merseyside's fellow Labour MPs took to social media to express their support today.
Wirral South MP Alison McGovern said: "All solidarity to @AngelaRayner. Ridiculous to even think about printing that nonsense. Since women were elected to the Commons 100 years ago we have been undermined, belittled, and objectified. I think it is supposed to put us off. Of course it has the opposite effect."
Liverpool Wavertree MP Paula Barker said: "I stand with @AngelaRayner - once again she like other female politicians is the subject of sexism & misogyny. These allegations show how low the Tory party have sunk to deflect from a law breaking PM." And Bootle MP Peter Dowd said: "This 'journalism' is simply out of the sewer. Well done @AngelaRayner for calling it out."
