Merseyside mourns death of 'wonderful' headteacher who had 'infectious smile'

Merseyside is mourning the loss of a "wonderful and amazing" teacher who had an "infectious smile".

Two years ago, Sarah Peacock was diagnosed with a brain tumour after suffering with headaches and collapsing at school. Despite completely chemotherapy treatment and holding onto her dream wedding, the cancer came back even more aggressively last year.

She was given just six to 12 months to live back in October 2021, but by January this was reduced to four to six weeks prompting herself and partner Richard Hewitson to move to Formby to be with her family. The couple and their friends and family jumped into gear organising a "full-on" wedding in Our Lady's Church in Lydiate.

Tributes poured in as people across Merseyside shared their memories of the amazing headteacher at Our Lady of Good Help in Wavertree. One ECHO reader said: "She taught my lads and was a great teacher as well as a lovely lady. So sad R.I.P Sarah."

Another wrote: "Such a sad read, but lovely to hear what a wonderful family she had and was surrounded by love, it’s all that counts in the end." A third added: "Very sad to read. Rest in peace Sarah."

Richard said the wedding "kept Sarah going" and she "got everything she wanted in the end", marrying her best friend surrounded by her loved ones. He went on to say it was the "most stunning day", but sadly, Sarah's health deteriorated immediately after the wedding on January 22, 2022, with her ability to move dwindling until she was in a wheelchair and then bedridden for three days.

She died, age 46, surrounded by family while Richard was in the shower, 10 days after they got married. ECHO reader Sujita Purushothaman said: "A wonderful teacher, my children were privileged to have her in their school. RIP."

Jane Dingle-Taylor wrote: "Amazing teacher to my boys. Such a lovely lady." Diane Rourke added: "An incredible lady! Fabulous teacher and an awesome neighbour and friend. That smile was infectious, she will be greatly missed."

Laura Elizabeth said: "A fantastic teacher and an even better friend who is missed so much" and Lindsey Ling said Sarah was "such a caring lady". Trisha Schofield-Thomas wrote: "What a beautiful woman inside and out. RIP Mrs Peacock" as Michelle Henderson said: "So sad. Such a beautiful young woman taken way too soon. Life’s so cruel sometimes."

Partner Richard has shared his story for Brain Tumour Awareness Month this March to help others in a similar situation. He wanted to pay special thanks for the support he got from Sarah's school, Our Lady of Good Help in Wavertree, the cancer support charity Maggie's and The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
