Merseyside falls silent to remember Queen Elizabeth II

Merseyside will fall silent today as the region honours the memory of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

It was only three months ago that hundreds of streets hosted parties to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee; the region decked out in flags and bunting as residents united to celebrate her historical 70-year reign. But today, 11 days since Queen Elizabeth passed away at Balmoral, Merseyside will come together once more, joining the rest of the nation in a two minute's silence at 11:55am to pay tribute to the country's longest-serving monarch.

The silence will be held at the end of the Queen's State Funeral service, which will take place from 11am at Westminster Abbey. The ceremony comes after hundreds of thousands of people have passed through Westminster Hall in the last few days, some queuing for more than 14 hours to see the Queen lying-in-state.

The Queen made several visits to Merseyside during her reign, with a trip to see the Grand National at Aintree Racecourse and the official opening a new facility at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital among them. Over the past 11 days, people from across the region have shared their memories of Her Majesty, describing her as a "kind" Queen who was "down to earth" and "full of integrity".

Earlier this week, hundreds lined the banks of the River Mersey as around 20 vessels gathered in front of the Three Graces to sound their horns in unison in a special maritime tribute to the late monarch. People have laid flowers at a stunning wall mural in Moreton, in Wirral, which was commissioned earlier this year for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, and books of condolence have been open at venues across Merseyside for people to pay their own personal tributes to the late monarch.

Yesterday, people packed out Liverpool Cathedral for a Civic Service of Remembrance for the Queen, where the Cathedral's choir and organ led the congregation in a powerful rendition of 'God Save the King'. Today, a number of Merseyside venues will close as a mark of respect, with supermarket giants such as Sainsbury's and Aldi, theatres and museums among them.

The Floral Pavilion Theatre, in New Brighton, which was officially re-opened by the Queen in December 2011 following a multi-million pound rebuild, will be open from 9am to mark the monarch's State Funeral, with a Book of Condolence available to sign and a free live screening of the ceremony from 11am.
