A chippy in Merseyside has been named one of the best in the country according to National Geographic.
The Swan on Stanley Street in Southport has been ranked ninth in the United Kingdom with the traditional fish and chip shop being the only one from Merseyside to make the list. Southport's oldest fish and chip restaurant has been run by the Defty family for more than 40 years and has continuously gained plaudits for the fresh food they serve.
National Geographic wrote about The Swan on their website when ranking the top nine chippies: "Fish and potatoes are locally sourced where possible and, while the menu lacks modern curveballs, it does the classics well enough to have inspired passions across the town. And at very moderate prices too."

The list is topped by The Magpie Cafe in Whitby, Yorkshire, a town that is known for quality fish and chip shops. The list is filled with a variety of locations, from Fife to Bournemouth, the UK is home to some outstanding chippies and The Swan is one of the best.
Earlier this year it was revealed that chippies were feeling the effects of price hikes due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with the National Federation of Fish Friers warned that up to a third of chip shops up and down the UK could be forced to close. Four key ingredients - sunflower oil, cod, haddock and potatoes- that make up one of the nation's favourite meals have soared in price.
The price shooting through the roof has been put down to the effects of Putin's Russian army advancing on Ukraine. As a result, chippies are having to change their menus and pass on the increase in price to their customers. Eventually, some businesses may be forced to turn off their fryers for good.
