Merseyside areas that have won big on the Postcode Lottery

Almost £3m has been shared between People's Postcode Lottery winners across Merseyside since 2021.

The subscription lottery requires players to put in £10 a month and they are then in with a chance to win prizes every day. Each weekend, players in two postcodes collect big wins in its Saturday and Sunday Street Prizes.

More than 1,700 players across Merseyside have won £1000 or more through the postcode lottery. So far this year, over 200 Wirral residents have won prizes thanks to their postcodes being drawn.

Here, we take a look at some of the areas in Merseyside to have won big on the postcode lottery and the stories of the winners.

Whiston

In 2022 a nan-of-eight found out she had won £30,000 the day after going under the knife as part of her cancer treatment. Elaine from Whiston was one of 10 neighbours who shared £330,000.

Alongside Elaine, eight neighbours in L35 3JS won £30,000 each and a tenth won £60,000 with two tickets. Receiving the news alongside friend and fellow cancer survivor Lisa, 62, who also won £30,000, Elaine said: “We’ve both been ill, so it certainly means an awful lot.”

Birkenhead

Four neighbours in one Wirral street each took home £30,000. One of the winners, Paul, said the winnings were the "last piece of the jigsaw" for him and his wife, who were hoping to start a family soon.

He said the couple would put the money to good use to make an upcoming holiday even more special: "We’ve got the Maldives booked in October for our two-year anniversary. I might pay for an upgrade on the flight.”

Paul said he planned to celebrate his big win with “a can of coke, the football and maybe a takeaway.”

Paul’s neighbours, both Victoria, each had plans to spend the cash on house moves, with one also eyeing up a pair of designer heels, “a pair of Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo shoes is something I’ve always wanted but obviously other things come first. That’ll be my treat to myself!”

Netherley

Pensioners June and Richard struck lucky just in time for Christmas 2021, winning £30,000 and were planning a dream destination holiday. June said: "We celebrated our 50th anniversary and my 70th birthday but we couldn't do anything because of lockdown. So, we were thinking Croatia, we've never been there and fancy that for sure.”

Neighbours James and Sandra were planning to follow suit, with an escape to Thailand on the cards, but not before treating their children.

Vauxhall

Two winners each claimed cheques for £30,000, while the remaining three, who played with two tickets, doubled their prize money and won £60,000 each. On seeing his £60,000 cheque Leonard was blown away but knew exactly how he was going to spend the money - book a “really posh cruise to St. Kitts, me and my other half, to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary.”

The dad-of-three also wanted to spoil his kids and five grandchildren. He added: "We'll treat them and go somewhere really special."

There was immediate talk of a street party to celebrate their wins together.

St Helens

St Helens got lucky twice in 2019, landing the big Postcode Millions prize twice in one year, with residents sharing a whopping £6 million.

Pat from St Helens won £333,332. Having worked at the local Asda for 25 years, she was hoping to retire early.

She said: "This money really is life changing. We've been dreaming since we found out we had won and now those dreams can come true."
