Merseyrail station nominated as one of the best in the North West

Merseyrail's Birkdale station in Southport has been nominated in this year's World Cup of Stations.

The competition takes place during Community Rail Week, May 22 - May 26, to showcase community rail and the benefits railways bring to residents, the environment and the local economy.

Five train stations across the North-West have been nominated in total. Over 100 nominees were cut down to a shortlist of 48 by presenter TV presenter Tim Dunn with the remaining now going head to head in a series of mini-battles to be crowned World Cup of Stations champion 2023.

Stations were nominated on a range of topics including rejuvenation, celebrating local businesses, environmental efforts or promoting local attractions and educational spaces.

Merseyside's Birkdale station, managed by Merseyrail, is nominated after the Friends group opened a community library following the closure of the areas council-run library. The library now boasts over 60 volunteers and 5000 books.

The four other north-west stations that have been nominated are:

  • Runcorn, Cheshire managed by Avanti West Coast. Nominated as a local art group supporting adults with mental health have erected a powerful art installation.
  • Goostrey, Cheshire managed by Northern. Nominated as the 'Friends' group have led numerous activities at Goostrey, including campaigning for the restoration of the Victorian station building, which is now home to Goostrey Art Studio.
  • Hindley, managed by Northern. Nominated as Hindley's volunteers include widowers, adults with learning difficulties and young people undertaking their @DofE awards. They have created a 'wildlife corridor' for foxes, hedgehogs, nesting birds and amphibians.
  • Lancaster, managed by Avanti West Coast. Nominated as a disused station building at Lancaster has been turned into a local brewery.*

People can vote for their favourite north west station today, May 24, on social media with the hashtag #WorldCupofStations or @RailDeliveryGrp.
