A Mersey tunnel has been closed in both directions due to damage sustained by a large vehicle.
Merseytravel has confirmed that the Queensway tunnel linking Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead is currently closed after a large goods vehicle damaged its infrastructure when driving through. The damage is said to have impacted the tunnel’s lighting with broken glass also spread across all of the lanes.
Repairs and a clean up operation and underway but the tunnel remains closed while the work takes place. Tunnel staff are also carrying out checks assess damage in other areas, according to Merseytravel.

The transport operator first alerted the closure earlier this morning with cars and other vehicles still unable to travel through. The closure is set to remain in place while the clean up and repairs continue with further updates expected to follow from Merseytravel.
Tunnel police have confirmed that asset management are currently “making safe damage to tunnel lighting and assessing damage in other areas. They added that a “full closure will remain in place at this time.”
As a result of the closure, the Wirral entrance to the Kingsway tunnel is said to be experiencing congestion due to the number of drivers having to change their route. Traffic was still building up in the area around 11.30am, Merseytravel confirmed.
