Mercedes ploughs through crowded charity shop window injuring three people in 'shocking' accident

A Mercedes driver smashed through the window of a crowded charity shop on a busy high street, leaving three people injured. Emergency services were called after the luxury red motor ploughed into the Age UK store in Boston, Lincolnshire, on Wednesday February 1.

Shocking photos shows how the Mercedes C Class came to a stop fully inside the shop - and even reached the till. Over 20 people were inside at the time and three people were left injured, including one victim who was taken to hospital.

Shop manager Lorraine Tompsett said: "It was a normal Wednesday morning on market day, with lots of hustle and bustle. Then we heard this incredible crash, followed by a series of crashes of broken glass.

"And then there was the amazing scene of a car in the middle of our shop and we immediately wanted to make sure everyone was safe. Three people had to go to hospital, two customers and the driver of the car who was a male.

"Everyone was shocked. We were supported incredibly well by the Pescod Square security team who arrived almost instantly as they heard the noise.

"The emergency services arrived very quickly - fire, police and ambulance.” Michele Jolly, Age UK Lincoln & South Lincolnshire CEO said “I couldn’t believe the news as it came through.

"The team and members of the public acted with such compassion and professionalism and leapt into action to help. I’m extremely proud of how the incident was handled by everyone.

"The building can be repaired and although to a local, independent charity the vital income will stop, our priority and concerns lie with those involved. The public’s messages of support have been extremely warmly received and on behalf of our team at Boston shop, we extend our deepest gratitude."

A Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said: "We were called at 11.06am on February 1 with a report of a red Mercedes car having crashed into the Age UK shop, on Strait Bargate, in Boston. Two people were injured, but not seriously.”

A spokesperson for East Midlands Ambulance Service added: “We received a call at 11.04am on 1 February to Strait Bargate in Boston. The caller reported that there had been a road traffic collision.

"We sent a paramedic in a fast response car and three crewed ambulances. Three patients were taken to Boston Pilgrim Hospital via crewed ambulances.”
