Mercedes driver posts Instagram clip of himself driving at 149mph on M4 and gets banned from the road

A dangerous driver filmed himself driving at 149mph on the M4 as a puppy slept on the passenger seat. The clip was shot before he almost lost control of the car. He posted the video to Instagram with the caption: "Puppy hit his first 150mph today."

Aaron Duffy, 29, uploaded the video to social media in July last year which showed him speeding on the motorway between junction 36 and 37 near Bridgend. The figure on the speedometer can be clearly seen and hits the 149mph mark.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Magistrates' Court heard a member of the public saw the footage and contacted GoSafe and an investigation started. Duffy was identified as the driver and CCTV from Traffic Wales was obtained.

The footage showed the defendant driving at high speed and almost losing control of his car as he crossed a solid white line towards the central reservation, kicking up dust and debris. Speed calculations were made of the footage and it was estimated Duffy was driving between 140mph and 150mph.

Duffy, of Heol y Bont, Bridgend, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. He was sentenced to an 18-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months. He was also banned from driving for two years was ordered to carry out a rehabilitation activity requirement and to pay court costs of £85.

Following the hearing PC Simmons of South Wales Police said: "Speeding and using a mobile phone whilst driving are two major contributors to road collisions. Combining these two actions puts every person on the road in danger and could have led to a devastating impact on themselves and their families. This incident, and the investigation work that followed it, is a great example of how we can work with the public to keep our roads safer."
