Memphis Recruit Mikey Williams Enters Plea Deal for Involvement in March Shooting

Memphis men’s basketball recruit Mikey Williams has entered a plea deal for his role in a shooting in March, KSWB-TV in San Diego reported Thursday. As part of the deal, Williams pleaded guilty in court to a count of making criminal threats. He will need to undergo anger management and gun safety courses before his sentencing date of Aug. 12, 2024, for that charge to be reduced to a misdemeanor.

Williams was arrested in April on suspicion of five charges of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a March 27 shooting before getting released on $50,000 bail.

After Williams’s arrest, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said the incident involved shots allegedly being fired at a car that had five people, including three minors, inside while leaving Williams’s residence in Jamul, Calif. No one was hurt in the incident. Williams pleaded not guilty to those five charges of assault with a deadly weapon and a count of firing inside an occupied vehicle in April.

The 19-year-old is a native of Southern California and was a five-star recruit who committed to Memphis for the 2023 season as one of the team’s top incoming freshmen. It’s unclear whether Williams will join Memphis this season.
