Memorial bowling event continues legacy of inspirational Lanarkshire mum

A Lanarkshire charity was the grateful recipient of funds raised during a memorial tournament held at Strathclyde Bowling Club.

It was played in memory of Cathie Lennon, a popular member of the Hamilton club who also volunteered at the Haven charity for over a decade.

The Blantyre woman passed away in 2018, and her family wanted to do something to raise money for a great cause. They held their first memorial tournament, which aims to continue Cathie’s legacy and raise funds for the charity she supported, back in 2019 to great success, however, subsequent events were postponed due to the pandemic.

Thankfully, this year’s event successfully went ahead at the end of last month and received a fantastic turnout.

The event, organised by Cathie's family including son John, daughter Michele and husband Michael, made £540 for The Haven, which will go directly to supporting families in the area who are affected by life-limiting illness.

An active member of her local community, Cathie was also a member of the Bowling Club, as are other members of the family.

In facty, son John and daughter Michele won the tournament in the event’s first year, which made it a very special occasion. This year’s trophy, however, went to Senga Law and Nan Brown – also club members - who very kindly donated their prize money to add to the pot.

June Torley, business support manager for The Haven, said: “The Haven has very strong, fond memories of Cathie and are forever grateful and appreciative of the support from her lovely family.

"The Haven would like to thank, John, Michele, Michael, the wider Lennon family (Colm, Pauline and Anne), and members of Strathclyde Bowling Club for their hospitality and hard work on the day.

"A special thanks also goes to everyone who very kindly donated raffle prizes, bought raffle tickets and made donations in support of the event.

"We are so thankful that Cathie’s legacy lives on, and look forward to next year’s event."
