Members of Greater Manchester youth project invited to Buckingham Palace

Members of a Greater Manchester youth project have been invited to Buckingham Palace to celebrate the impact of the Duke Of Edinburgh (DofE) programme. Hideout Youth Zone has five sites in Greater Manchester - in Bolton, Gorton, Harpurhey, Oldham and Wigan.

A sixth in Salford could soon follow. Bosses support more nearly 100 young people and guide them through the DofE programme. Recently, 35 completed their Bronze Award.

The young achievers were accompanied by members of the HideOut staff who also completed the Duke Of Edinburgh Expedition Skills course across the summer.

The group won the Manchester Duke of Edinburgh Challenge in October 2022 - awarded to a school or organisation its ability to develop and inspire young people through the DofE.

Extra funding has been committed to enlisting more young people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and those with special educational needs.

Hideout received a £2,230 grant.

Deputy Head of Youth Work, Kerin Morris, said: “We’ve loved seeing our members get involved with the DofE programme this year, and to be invited to the celebrations gave us the opportunity to reflect on what we’ve achieved.

"We’ve helped so many young people step out of their comfort zones and achieve incredible things. Everyone deserves the opportunity to take part in these programmes.

"I’m proud that at HideOut we’re reducing those barriers for young people in the local area. They’ve loved it!"
