A teenage girl has died following a serious crash between two vehicles at Carlton, in Melbourne's inner north, at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to the Lygon Street scene shortly before midday on Saturday after a Volkswagen Passat collided with an Alfa Romeo, which spun out of control and struck two pedestrians.

The 16-year-old girl from Brunswick, who was a passenger in the Alfa Romeo, was critically injured and taken to hospital.

Authorities said she died on Wednesday.

A 40-year-old Essendon man who was driving the Volkwagen has since been charged with negligently causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing injury and possessing methylamphetamine.

There were two other people in the Alfa Romeo with the teenager, a 61-year-old man and 53-year-old woman, who are both also from Brunswick.

They were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two pedestrians who were struck on Lygon Street, a 42-year-old man and a 40-year-old man, both from Carlton, were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the Volkswagen had been seen driving erratically before it hit the other car and the pedestrians.

The driver was detained by bystanders before being taken to hospital under police guard.

Police said the Volkswagen driver has been remanded in custody while he waits to face court.
