Melbourne's rail network will continue moving with looming strikes called off after a pay deal was reached.

Train workers had threatened to walk off the job on Friday and next Wednesday as part of a push for better pay and conditions.

However, on Monday the Rail, Tram and Bus Union called off the industrial action after reaching an in-principal agreement with Metro Trains following negotiations on Sunday.

Drivers, train controllers, authorised officers and customer service staff are set to receive a 17 per cent pay rise over four years under the deal.

The union will take the offer to a members' meeting later this week.

Secretary Vik Sharma said it was a great outcome.

"Our union will always fight to deliver the best outcomes for members," he said.

"If that involves the need to stop trams or trains we won't hesitate."

Metro Trains chief executive Raymond O'Flaherty confirmed trains would operate as normal on Friday.

"We are pleased to have reached a fair and mutually beneficial agreement," he said.
