When your mum wore Scary Spice’s platform boots, following in her footsteps is easier said than done.
But Mel B’s daughter, the young aspiring musician Phoenix Chi, is determined to create her own sound when she launches her own music career, and admits: “I sound nothing like my mum.”
Phoenix, 23, wants to “build her own way” in the industry, and is starting by DJing to develop her own vibe – even if she will drop the odd Spice Girl remix.
She says: “I want it to come naturally – I don’t want to force anything. It’s going to be great.”
But she won’t be wearing mum’s trademark platforms or any leopard print, despite having worn some of her old outfits for a fashion project. “I did a little shoot,” she says, but that’s as far as raiding mum’s wardrobe goes. “Not on a night out,” she jokes.
The youngster, who featured in Mel’s 2001 video for Lullaby and starred in ITV ’s The Games, attended the launch of EE’s Studio store at Westfield’s White City where she admitted her mum is her toughest critic.
Phoenix – whose dad is dancer Jimmy Gulzar – laughs: “She doesn’t beat around the bush, it’s tough love. She lives up to her Scary name –it’s a good choice.”
