Mehrdad Ghodoussi's message to Newcastle United squad following late Wolves draw

Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has praised the Magpies for refusing to give in as they salvaged a late draw at Wolves.

United boasted 64% possession and registered 21 shots (twice as many as Wolves) but were on the verge of losing their first Premier League game of the season until Saint Maximin's late and magical intervention.

Ruben Neves had given Wolves the lead in the first half with an impressive low drive into the bottom corner. Raul Jimenez also had a goal ruled out after a VAR review correctly deemed Pedro Neto to have pushed Ryan Fraser in the build-up.

Hwang Hee-Chan’s sliced clearance fell invitingly for Allan Saint-Maximin on the edge of the penalty area and the Frenchman unleashed a sensational strike beyond the reach of Jose Sa.

Ghodoussi posted on Twitter: “We fought hard, controlled the game and didn’t give up. Onwards and upwards. Thank you to everyone who travelled down to support us.”

Newcastle extended their unbeaten start to the season (W1 D3) to climb above Manchester United and into seventh place. The Magpies are only one of five English top-flight sides yet to taste defeat.

United were without key players Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson, while new signing Alexander Isak was unable to feature due to his work permit not arriving in time.

The Magpies will travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Wednesday evening (KO 8pm) with the Reds fresh off the back of a Premier League record equalling 9-0 win over AFC Bournemouth.
