Meghan would get confusing new princess title if stripped of Duchess of Sussex - expert

There has been much discussion over the past few years over whether Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should be allowed to use their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles as they are no longer working royals.

Since quitting their senior roles at the beginning of 2020, the couple have moved to the US and are now setting up lucrative business deals with the likes of Netflix and Spotify. While the Queen banned them using 'Sussex Royal' for their commercial projects, they kept their HRH and Sussex titles.

But there have been fresh claims for them to be removed after their bombshell Netflix docuseries, but a royal expert has claimed Meghan's alternative title could leave royal fans scratching their heads - especially those following the couple's new lives in the US.

Speaking to The Royal Beat, Ingrid Seward, Editor in Chief of Majesty Magazine claims she doesn't believe the couple will lost the titles.

She said: "I don’t think anything will happen to the titles because, if they lose their titles, Harry is still a prince of the blood and Meghan instead of being the Duchess of Sussex, [would] be Princess Henry... That really would [confuse the Americans]. I think [it’s] probably best just to leave it because it looks unkind, it looks unnecessary.

"The Queen gave them the titles, let them keep them - they’re going to be ‘H and M’ anyway. I think the best thing is to leave them, ignore them, and let them get on with it - which is really what the Palace and the Royal Family are doing.”

Harry's real name is actually Henry, however King Charles and Princess Diana announced they plans to use the name Harry on a day-to-day basis when he was born.

By marrying a prince, Meghan can take a princess title but only with her husband's name. The same applies to the Princess of Wales, who was technically Princess William as well as the Duchess of Cambridge when she joined the royal family.

However since being appointed the Princess of Wales by her father-in-law following the Queen's death earlier this year, Kate is now a Princess in her own right.

However as Harry will never be the Prince of Wales, Meghan will never have the Princess of Wales title.

The next person who will use it will be Prince George's partner, but only once his father takes the throne.

Meghan and Kate listed their unusual Princess titles on the birth certificates of their children.

On George, Charlotte and Louis's official documents, Kate wrote: "Princess of the United Kingdom". Meghan would have done the same for Archie and Lilibet.
