Meghan McCain has suggested that Barack and Michelle Obama are heading for divorce, according to rumours she’d heard from “serious journalists”.
The 40-year-old podcaster and daughter of late US politician John McCain was speaking to Tara Palmeri during a recent podcast appearance when they turned to the topic of the former president and first lady.
During their discussion, Ms McCain claimed that “reputable people” had told her that the couple weren’t on the best of terms.
Their remarks came soon after Ms Obama decided to skip Donald Trump’s recent inauguration, fuelling rumours that the couple may be facing marriage issues.
“I have been hearing this rumor that the Obamas are getting a divorce by reputable people,” the politicial insider said. “I’m not talking about TMZ. I’m not talking about Perez Hilton, although I love him, he’s my friend.“
She continued: ”I’m talking about like very serious journalists telling me that they’re hearing that the Obama divorce rumors are true.”
Ms Palmeri also chimed in, suggesting that she’d heard “they live separate lives.”
The duo then went on to gossip about a picture Mr Obama had shared at the weekend, criticising him for sharing what they thought was an unfavourable image of his wife.
Alongside the post, he wrote: “Happy birthday to the love of my life, @MichelleObama. You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love you!”
Speaking about her own husband, Ms McCain said: “I would kill Ben if he put a picture of me looking like no makeup with that lighting on social media.”
Ms Obama, who recently turned 61, has been absent from several key political events, including Jimmy Carter’s recent funeral and Trump’s inauguration.
However, she wasn’t the only one. Several other prominent political figures, including congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, were among those who skipped the January 20 ceremony.
Despite this, it’s prompted questions about whether Michelle and Barack are facing troubles in their more than three-decade relationship.
Mr and Mrs Obama have been married since 1992 and share two daughters, Malia and Sasha. While in the White House, they were a picture-perfect couple, frequently attending events together and showing off their adoration for each other.
They were reportedly last seen together in public in December 2024 but have so far refrained from responding to any public speculation about the status of their marriage.
A representative for Ms Obama has been approached by The Standard for comment.
