Meghan Markle shed a tear for the Queen during Her Majesty’s moving state funeral today.
The Duchess of Sussex appeared emotional during the service at Westminster Abbey, at one point wiping away tears as she joined other members of the Royal Family in commemorating the life of the 96-year-old monarch. Meghan stood alongside her husband Prince Harry in the procession behind the Queen’s coffin, following the Prince and Princess of Wales and their two eldest children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
Meghan paid her own subtle tribute to the Queen, wearing the pearl earrings that were gifted to her by the sovereign on the occasion of their first public outing together in 2018. The Duchess paired the earrings with a black hat, cape and gloves, another nod to the long reign of the Queen which bore resemblance to the white ensemble that Meghan wore for the Platinum Jubilee in June.
Several other members of the Royal Family were understandably emotional as they said goodbye to the Queen, The Mirror reports . King Charles appeared close to tears as tributes were paid to his late mother, while the Countess of Wessex dabbed her eyes and Princess Beatrice was also seen crying.
Justin Welby told mourners in the Abbey: "People of loving service are rare in any walk of life. Leaders of loving service are still rarer. But in all cases those who serve will be loved and remembered when those who cling to power and privileges are forgotten.
"The grief of this day - felt not only by the late Queen's family but all round the nation, Commonwealth and world - arises from her abundant life and loving service, now gone from us. She was joyful, present to so many, touching a multitude of lives."
Mr Welby also said that the Queen had declared on her 21st birthday "that her whole life would be dedicated to serving the nation and Commonwealth". He added: "Rarely has such a promise been so well kept. Few leaders receive the outpouring of love we have seen."
