A friend of Meghan Markle came under fire after calling her “princess” in a happy birthday post. In the message shared on his Instagram page, actor Tyler Perry wished the Duchess of Sussex a happy 41st birthday.
Alongside a picture of Meghan, he wrote: “I've had a front row seat in your life for the past few years. I've watched you endure things that would have broken a lot of people.
"I'm so incredibly proud to see how you, your husband, and your kids are now. It fills me with joy to say Happy Birthday Princess Meghan.”
But others hit back at his choice of words, pointing out that Meghan’s title was Duchess. One said: "So very disappointed to read your thoughts on this subject Tyler. And she is not that title that you bestowed upon her."
While another wrote: “Not Princess Meghan no matter how hard you try.” And another said: "She's not a princess. Please understand your Royal titles."
One response to this said: "We don't care about your rules here. We will call her Princess Meghan just like the only Queens we reference are Queen Serena and Queens Aretha and Beyonce"
Many others also commented in support of the post, wishing "Princess Meghan" a happy birthday. One said: "Beauty, class and kindness. I adore this true Princess of the world!!!"
And another said: "She's truly a princess. Happy birthday Meghan."
Members of the royal family also sent well wishes to the Duchess of Sussex on her birthday. “Wishing a happy birthday to The Duchess of Sussex!”, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrote on Instagram.
