Meghan Markle's heart-warming gesture to Princess Charlotte as they depart Westminster Abbey

Meghan Markle was spotted sharing a comforting smile with Princess Charlotte, as the royals left Westminster Abbey this afternoon following Her Majesty the Queen's funeral.

Recognising that her seven-year-old niece must have been distressed following the passing of her great grandmother, the Duchess of Sussex sported a sweet grin to the youngster while they exited the building.

Princess Charlotte and her brother, Prince George, nine, were two of the youngest members of the royal family to attend Queen Elizabeth II's funeral today - with their younger sibling, Prince Louis, not joining the family at today's procession as he was presumed too young to attend, aged just four.

The Mirror reports that eagle eyed viewers of the national coverage of the funeral took to social media after spotting the act of consolidation from Prince Harry's wife. One Twitter user, writing: "It looked like Meghan tried to smile at Princess Charlotte."

Another, added: "Pretty sure when they are walking out of the church, Meghan smiles at Princess Charlotte."

Princess Charlotte and her older brother travelled to Westminster Abbey in the same car as the Queen Consort Camilla, and their mother Princess Catharine. It is the first occurrence of the young royals being spotted in public since the devastating news of the Queen's death broke on September 8.

Queen Elizabeth II was 96-years-old when she passed.

During today's emotional service, Princess Charlotte honoured her great-grandmother by wearing a small pin in the shape of a horseshoe on her smart black coat. Sharing the UK's longest-ever reigning monarch's love of horses, it has been reported that the youngster is currently learning how to ride horseback.

When the Queen's coffin came past the family, she also appeared to remind Prince George of the royal protocol of needing to bow.

A number of mourners have praised the youngsters on their composure during today's event, being brave and courageous in the face of adversity. One social media user, wrote: "Touching moment - Prince George and Princess Charlotte have done so well today," while another, added: "So proud of Prince George and Princess Charlotte."

A third, penned: "Prince George and Princess Charlotte are such wonderful and well-behave children."
