Meghan Markle has spoken about a frightening ordeal that saw her son Archie narrowly escape a fire in his bedroom, leaving the family ‘in tears’ and ‘shaken’.
The Duchess of Sussex recounted the events on her new podcast, Archetypes, as the first episode guest starring tennis champion Serena Williams was released on Tuesday. Meghan explained that the incident happened when she and husband Prince Harry were on tour in South Africa with then four-month-old Archie.
Archie’s then-nanny had just briefly taken the youngster from his bedroom to grab a snack downstairs when the fire broke out, The Mirror reports . “In that amount of time that she went downstairs, the heater in the nursery caught on fire,” Meghan recalled.

Adding that there was no smoke detector present, the Duchess went on: “Someone happened to just smell smoke down the hallway, went in, fire extinguished. He was supposed to be sleeping in there.”
Meghan then recounted the heart-stopping moment that she had been told about the fire in her son’s bedroom. “Of course, as a mother, you go, 'Oh, my God, what?' Everyone's in tears, everyone's shaken,” she said.
“And what do we have to do? Go out and do another official engagement? I said, ‘This doesn't make any sense..”
Elsewhere in the new podcast, listeners were also treated to a surprise cameo from Prince Harry. The royal popped his head into the recording studio to greet his wife and compliment Serena Williams’ hairdo.
“You wanna come say hi? Look who just popped in,” Meghan said, before the couple could be heard greeting each other in British accents.
Harry then told Serena: “I like what you've done with your hair. That's a great vibe.”
Serena replied: “Thank you. Good to see you too as always, I miss you guys,” to which Harry insisted: “Well, come and see us,” before Meghan said that the trio would make plans together.
In the Archewell podcast, the Duchess vows to explore the “labels that try to hold women back”, with her conversation with Serena looking at “the double standard women face when they are labelled 'ambitious' and the ripple effects this has on other aspects of their lives”.
